Class of 2007: Defensive Linemen (Top 296)

Most of the thumbnails listed below were written in the spring/early summer. Rankings have been modified since then.

1 Marvin Austin DL 6'3 299 4.83 Washington Ballou D.C. Marvin's national coming out party was during the 2005 combine season, where he was dominant as a mere sophomore. He followed that up with a tremendous junior season, registering 86 tackles, 12 TFL and eight sacks. It's rare to find a 300-pounder who runs a sub-4.9 at a combine, and Marvin is that man. He also possesses tremendous strength, having done 30 reps in the 185-pound bench press at a combine his sophomore year. He plays low, uses leverage well and is very affective with his hands. He also has excellent lateral mobility for a wide-body. Just a tremendous national top 20 caliber prospect, at the very least. He leads a strong contingent of D.C. prospects this year. He transfered from Washington Coolidge to Ballou after his junior year, where hew will be joined by his coach at Coolidge and several teammates. 2 Everson Griffin DL/RB 6'4 264 4.46 Avondale Agua Fria Union Arizona Griffin is the top prospect in Arizona. A versatile performer at FB and DE, he projects at DE in college. As a sophomore he recorded 39 tackles and 10 sacks. As a junior he registered 70 tackles and six sacks. On offense carried the ball 134 times for 794 yards and 10 TDs. He is really quick (super first step), athletic, physical, strong (340 bench, 455 squat) and aggressive off the edge - the ideal DE. As good an athlete as you will find in Arizona, earning all-star honors not just on the gridoron, but also in basketball and track (shot put). Outstanding straight ahead speed but needs to improve his lateral quickness. He was named the MVP of the Los Angeles Scout.com combine, showing off his great speed, technique and strength in completely dominating drills. He plays DE at Armwood, a strong program, but projects inside in college. As a junior, he registered 60 tackles and 9 sacks. Just dominates games on both sides of the ball. With his large frame and long arms, he has the ability to clog running lanes and get to the quarterback on passing plays. Just scratching the surface of his potential. One coach had this to say about him: "He just stands out on film, a man among boys. He's so big and athletic. He's one of the top 2-3 linemen I've seen on film this year and I've seen a lot of film." He has that rare combination of size and speed that coaches love to see in a TE. As a TE he can get downfield to make the catch and do damage after the reception. On the other hand, he has the blocking skills of a D1 offensive lineman. On the defensive line he has an incredible first step and has looked completely dominat in one-on-one drills in various combines. One coach said "after seeing just three minutes of his film I knew that we had to offer asap. You just don't find linemen with a skill set like that too often." As a junior he had 24 receptions for 369 yards and 1 TD and at DE registered 75 tackles, 23 TFLs and 13 sacks. As a sophomore he had 25 receptions for 325 yards and 8 TDs. He just explodes off the ball. One of the most impressive physical specimens to emerge out of southeastern Michigan in years. As a junior he tallied 83 tackles, 20 TFL and 8 sacks. He's a solid student with a 3.5 GPA and 21 ACT. One scout had this to say: "He's a real good one. On ther combine circuit he has further strengthened his status as one of the nations elite linemen. As a junior he had 121 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, 2 sacks, and 5 fumble recoveries. He also plays basketball. Bailey has a 3.4 GPA and scored a 1010 on the SAT. A tremendous pass rusher, in part due to his 4.5 speed and great frame, he registered 10 sacks as a junior. He will need to get stronger and improve his run-stopping skills, but that hould come once he gets on a college weight program and finished his prep basketball career. One coach had this to say about him: "He is just so athletic and plays great off the edge. His athleticism really jumps out on film. He will need to get stronger for Big Ten-level ball, but that will come in a couple of years. He possesses tremendous strength (400 pound bench press) and has fine speed, both lateral and straight-ahead. He is an all-arounder who plays both the run and pass very well. He is very aggressive and his motor is always running. His only possible negative, a lack of great height, actually helps him in playing low and inside. As a junior he tallied 70 tackles and 4 sacks playing on a defense that usually held the opponents to four and out. He tosses opposing players around lik a rag doll. One coach said: "A hard-nosed and tough inside lineman who has great strength and can also pursue the ball very well for an inside guy. 132 Michael Ray DL/OL 6'2 236 5.28 La Marque Texas A talented two-way lineman with fine speed. I like him on defense as his motor is always running and he can make plays. Other schools, however, like him as an OG. Although a bit on the small side, he looked impressive while making the combine rounds in 2006. Has been somewhat overshadowed by a couple of his teammates, including fellow lineman and Texas verbal Andre McGaskey, but earlier in his prep career he was the prospect on the team with the biggest reputation (Second Team All-District as a sophomore). 2-District 23-4A (OL) OFFERS: BAY,MO,KANST,KAN

133 James Wilson DL/WR/TE 6'5 220 Hollyood Hills Florida Not to be confused with the talented OL out of Nease with the same name, this James Wilson is a highly recruited line prospect out of Florida as well. A tall, rangy and athletic DE out of talent-rich Broward County, Wilson earned First Team All-County honors as a junior. Still a relative unknown on the national stage, he should emerge as one of the top prospects in southeastern Florida once his film makes the rounds. 1-Miami Herald-Broward-6A-4A (DL)

134 MacKey Mailo DL/LB/OL 6'0 272 5.36 Carson California Mailo lacks ideal height for a lineman, but makes up for it with great strength (29 bench reps), explosiveness (impressive 30-inch vertical) and agility (4.88 shuttle). He is a very fine DT prospect. In 2004, he was a First Team Sophomore All-State selection after registering 59 tackles. His junior season was hindered as a result of a torn MCL, but he still managed to put up some impressive numbers, registering 71 tackles, 6 sacks, 15 TFL and 5 forced fumbles. He's a cousin of USC lineman Fred Matua. He has shined during the 2006 combine circuit, dominating in one-on-one drills and testing very well. He is also a fine 3.6 student. 8-DL-City Section (LA Times-August 2005); 1-PS-LA City Section

135 Eron Moses DL/TE 6'5 225 4.98 Anaheim Esperanza California Moses is a rapidly rising prospect who was primarily a basketball player before going out for football as a junior. It was a wise decision. As a junior, he had 2 receptions for 9 yards and registered 25 tackles, 6 TFL and 2 sacks from his DE position. He has looked impressive during the 2006 combine circuit. Still a bit on the raw side, but an extremely athletic speed rusher who plays for one of Orange Conty's strongest programs. OFFERS: BOISEST,WYO,NEV,UTAH

136 Patrick Dorsey DL/LB 6'2 265 5.22 Houston Yates Texas Kansas Dorsey's computer numbers don't stand out, but his play on the field certainly does. An undersized nose guard with tremendous technique and quickness off the ball, he earned First Team All-District honors as a junior. He has grown a bit the past year and is now on the radar of some of the Big Eight's top programs. Has looked good in one-on-one drills during the 2006 combine circuit, playing much better than his numbers. He committed to Kansas in July. 14-JRS-TEX (December 2005); 1-District 22-4A (DL); Top 120 Juniors Texas (DL; Summer 2005) OFFERS: HOU,KANN,BAY

OFFERS: BAY,COLST

138 Michael Cherry DL 6'5 285 4.80 Austin Crockett Texas One of the premier defensive linemen in central Teaxs, Cherry has been a bit under the recruiting radar in 2006 but that should change. He has a very good combination of size and agility. 1-PS-Central Texas; Top 120 Juniors Texas (Summer 2005)

OFFERS: KANST

142 Rapheal Guidry DL 6'3 216 5.22 La Marque Texas Guidry is yet another talented lineman out of La Marque. He has looked good during the 2006 combine circuit. Especially effective playing off the edge, he has a great frame that still needs to fill out, long arms, decent strength (265 bench, 405 squat, 29 vertical) and fine quickness. your site is a good reason why college recruiters need to go to high school games and view players themselves and take web opinions with a grain of salt. I recently scouted the Batavia/Glenbard South game in Illinois and was surprised to find that your "honorable mention" OL man Ryan Grossman DOMINATED your #95 top DL recruit, Mike Garrity. Don't get me wrong, Garrity is a great player, but never made a play against Grossman, although Grossman is not rated as high. The way I see it is that web feedback comes from other sites, not the players true ability, so it all feeds from the original source. Grossman was a true battler in the trenches. I admit, I looked up info on the web first and now will take it all with a grain of salt. College recruiters need to see for themselves what player ability is and not bother with web info, other than basics.

As a D3 college recruiter, we have been scanning on-line articles to try to snag some good players. We have Ryan Grossman on our list of recruits and recently viewed his tape, which included the clip the previous recruiter mentioned Glenbard South vs. Batavia where he goes against top Illinois verbal, Mike Garrity. He was right, Grossman did better than OK, he dominated. We're thinking since Glenbard South did not have a great season, he's not getting as much attention, which will hopefully help us snag him. Thought I would add to the list of comments, since there are a few posts about him.

Rivals had Ryan Grossman commited to Eastern Illinois on scholarship. Good post D3 recruiter, you really snagged him. By the way, Grossman was all-state, all-area, and all-conference, not just a rumor.
