Class of 2007: Defensive Backs (Top 417)
Most of the thumbnails listed below were written in the spring/early summer. Rankings have been slightly modified since then.1 Ronald Johnson DB/RB 6'0 177 4.68 Muskegon Michigan Johnson is the top prospect in Michigan class that is the strongest and deepest in years and he's probably the best DB prospect to emerge from the state in at least a quarter of a century. A dominant defender and also a talented WR for a strong Muskegon program. He was hampered a bit as a junior due to a knee injury that is reportedly fully healed. He could play either safety or cornerback at the next level, as he has the toughness, hitting ability, quickness, size, hips and speed to play either. At a seven-on-seven tournament last summer in South Bend he reportedly outshined everbody in what was called one of the most impressive such performances ever seen by scouts in attendance. Last summmer he was more impressive than several touted rising senior all-american DBs at the Michigan camp. As a sophomore he set a school record with 10 INTs. Plays great in space and has an innate ability to make plays. OIne coach had this to say: "He's a man among boys on film. He also has the good fortune to play for Tony Annese at Muskegon. He's an old school coach who teaches great technique and has the best weight program in the state. He's doing miracles for a once dormant Muskegon program that is loaded with talented athletes." Possibly one of the top 5 overall prospects in the nation. OFFERS: PUR,MICH, ND,CMU, TEN,MICHST, OHST,CLEM, USC,IA, WISC,PUR,UCLA
2 Joe McKnight DB/RB 5'11 180 4.40 River Ridge John Curtis Louisiana McKnight is a real dynamo on film and could play one of several positions in college - RB,WR or in the secondary. He has great speed, quickness and the ability to cut on a dime and run through traffic. He just plays tremendously in space. On defense he has tremendous coverage skills, turns his hips very well and really anticipates well. McKnight is also a tremenous return man, perhaps the best in the nation. Joe had an interesting junior season due to Hurricane Katrina. He played a ouple of games with Class 2A power Shreveport Evangel Christian before returning to John Curtis. Inn just 6 games at Curtis he had 30 carries for 372 yards and 7 TDs and caught 22 passes for 549 yards and 6 TDs. On defense, he registered 39 tackles, broke up six passes and posted five interceptions. Joer also stars in track and basketball. As a sophomore in the Class 4A track meet, he came in second in the 100-meters (10.7) and fourth in the 200-meters. One coach had this to say: "McKnight has a ton of talent. He iks quick, fast, can cut on a dime and is extremely versatile. His film is about as good as any skill position kid I've seen this year. He's a bit lean, but he should fill out once he focuses on fooball." 1-LA (Winter 2006); 1-Orlando Sentinel-All-Southern Team; 1-LA (Dandy Don-January 2005); 1-AS; 1-LSWA-2A-AS (Defensive MVP); 1-District 10-2A (WR & RET; OF MVP); 1- All-Championship Game Team (RB); 2-LA (September 2005) OFFERS: MS,LSU, FLA, FSU,AUB, MSST,ARK, ND
3 Eric Berry DB/QB/ATH 6'1 190 4.31 Fairburn Creekside Georgia As the team's best athlete, he plays QB and safety at Creekside, but CB is definitely his position in college and he is one of the nation's top prospects at that position. He has really impressed at combines, including turning in a blazing 4.31 forty. He has the size and great hips to really excel at CB in college. He also has the speed, having won the state 200-meter title with a time of 21.7 seconds. As a junior he rushed for 1,218 yards and 13 TDs and passed for 852 yards and 8 TDs. As a sophomore he had 1,435 yards rushing with 17 TDs and 1,198 yards passing with 4 TDs. He's a solid student with a 3.7 GPA and 970 SAT. One of the top 3-4 prospects in the state. 4 Mark Barnes DB/WR 6'3 190 4.50 Columbia Richland Northeast South Carolina Many think that Barnes, not Will Korn, is the top prospect in the state of South Carolina. He is a tall and rangy safety who could also excel at WR in college. He has ideal size for a safety, has great range, great athleticism and is an outstanding tackler. As a junior Barnes recorded over 80 tackles, 5 INTs and almost 20 pass break-ups. On offense he had 25 catches for over 500 yards and 5 TDs. As a sophomore he posted 75 tackles, 4 INTs, 2 blocked kicks, 2 blocked punts and had 25 catches for 500 yards and 7 TDs. He may prefer to play WR at thenext level, but I prefer him as a safety. His school is one of the top producers of talent on the atlantic coast. 1-WR-SCAR (Spring 2006); Top 12-SCAR-JRs (Winter 2006); Top 20 SC JRS (Winter 2006); GoUpstate.com Top 15 4A Players to Watch in 06 (DEC 05) OFFERS: 40+ April Os: KY,WAKE, SCAR,CLEM, DUKE,VT,NCAR,MD, AUB,AL, LOU,BC,LSU,UVA, MICH,ND, TEN,PSU,USC
5 Gary Gray DB/QB 5'11 170 4.49 Columbia Richland Northeast South Carolina Notre Dame Gary couples with Mark Barnes to form the best secondary duo in the nation. As a junior he started at both QB and CB but is a CB all the way at the next level. Lacks Barnes' stature but he's a tremendous cover corner who possesses a smooth backpedal, nice hips and great ball skills. Great in man-to-man coverage and surprisingly impressive in run support. As a junior Gray totalled 1,600 yards of offense to go with 11 TDs. On defense he registered 60 tackles, 4 INTs and 16 pass break-ups. Just about everyone who has seen his film has offered. One of the top 4 prospects in the state. He initially committed to South Carolina in March but reopened his recruitment in July. He committed to Notre Dame in Septmber. 6 Chad Jones DB/WR 6'3 215 4.55 Baton Rouge Southern Lab Louisiana A standout in fotball and baseball who could actually be an even better baseball prospect (pitches a 95mph fastball and a standout outfielder). Played at St. Augustine's as a sophomore but had to move to Southern Lab due to Huricane Katrina. Posted 84 tackles and 4 INTs as a junior. Has a tremendous frame and great speed. Could still really fill out. His older brother, Al, is a gridster at LSU. He really stood out at the LSU summer camp following his sophomore year. Could also project as an OLB as he keeps growing. Has the soft hands to also play TE. A bit raw as a player as he's still learning the game, but has all the skills. 2-LA (Winter 2006); 4-LA (Dandy Don-January 2005); 1-AS; 1-LSWA-1A-AS (DB); 1-Baton Rouge Advocate-3A-2A-1A -Metro; 1-District 7-1A (DB); 1-LA (September 2005)OFFERS: LSU,MS,AUB, MIA,VAND,MS,FLA, MSST,AL, ARK,CLEM,ORE
7 Eugene Clifford DB/RB 6'2 200 4.49 Cincinnati Colerain Ohio Ohio State Eugene is the latest Division 1 prospect out of Ohio power Colerain (following the likes of Mister Simpson, Connor Smith, Cobrani Mixon and Tyler Moeller) and he may be the best of the bunch. An uber-talented safety prospect, Clifford was, in my view, the most impressive defender on the team as a junior. He has an ideal combination of size and speed and really plays a physical and aggresive game. As a junior he registered 147 tackles and 6 INTs on defense and scored 7 TDs as a receiver on offense. It's a great year for DBs in Ohio, the midwest, and nationally an Clifford is right up there with the best of them. One coach had this to say about him: "On film he's always around the ball and is great at reading and reacting. He is tremendous against the run and tackles well in the open field. He really likes to hit. He has a nice backpedal and pretty good hips." He committed to Ohio State in September. 5-OH-JRS (December); 1-Ohio News Network-AS; 2-OPS-AS (DB); 2-OPS-I-AS; 2-RB-Jrs-OH (August 2005) OFFERS:MICH,CIN, ILL,OHST, WVU,MICHST, BC,IA, IN,MIN, MIA(OH),PUR
8 Major Wright DB 6'2 195 4.50 Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas Florida Wright is one of the nation's many great safety prospects. As a junior he recorded 58 tackles and 6 INTs playing for a team that went to the state Class 6A title game. As a sophomore he had 39 tackles and 4 INTs. He is one of the most physical DBs in the nation and plays with quickness and great anticipation. He is strong in both run support and coverage. His coach claims that he's the best DB prospect to emerge out of Aquinas in many years, and that includes such greats as Miami's Anthony Reddick and Ohio State's Nate Salley. 44-FLA-JRs (Winter 2006); 1-Miami Herald-Broward-6A-4A; 1-Fort Lauderdale SS-Broward-Large; 3Top 12 Juniors (Summer 2005) OFFERS: AUB,FLA, GA,MIA, MICH,NCST,ND, OHST,TEN, MS,PUR
9 Marshall Jones DB/RB 6'1 190 4.50 Westlake Village Oaks Christian California USC Not as highly touted as teammates Jimmy Clausen and Marc Tyler, but who is. Like Tyler and Clausen, however, Jones is an elite national blue-chipper who has his choice of schools if he can get his academics in order, and he does have some work to do in order to qualify. As a junior two-way starter at WR & CB he excelled at cornerback for an Oaks Christian team that allowed just 87 points in 13 games. Jones intercepted five passes for 219 yards in return yardage, recovered one fumble and recorded 71 tackles, including 52 solo tackles. As a wide receiver, Jones caught 23 passes for 407 yards and three touchdowns. Jones is a speedy (10.6 100-meters) and physical defender who probably projects at safety at the next level due to his size and hitting ability. One coach had this to say about him: "That team is loaded with talent and Jones is to the defense what Clausen is to the offense. He has great speed and can really lay the wood. He's the best DB in California." He committed to USC in June. 10 Dionte Allen DB/RB/WR 6'0 170 4.50 Orchard Lake St. Mary's Michigan Florida State Dionte is part of a depp and talented St. Mary's squad and one of several very good DBs in Michigan this year. He has great leadership skills and was named the first junior captain in recent menory at St. Mary's. He projects as a CB. As a junior he registered 56 tackles and five interception. This is what his coach, Geoge Porritt, told the Eccentric newspaper: "He has a great knack to get to the ball,'' Porritt said. "He was a leader out there and it's great to have him coming back". He's an electrifying perfomer who plys very well in space, both on offense and ndistance, and when he has the ball in his hands he is a threat to go all the way. Also stars in track in basketball. Has great leping ability. One coach had this to say about him: "He's an excellent CB prospect. He has nice hips, backpedals well, can go up and get the ball and has great overall ball skills. He lacks that super certain quality that Ron Johnson and Charles Woodson have, but those guys are rare and you don't see that every year. Dionte reminds me a bit of Ty Law, which isn't too bad at all, is it?" He committed to Florida State in August. 12 Phelon Jones DB/WR/QB 6'1 192 4.38 Mobile McGill-Toolen Alabama Miami The more I learn about Phelon the more I like him. He could wind up being the top prospect in Alabama. As of now he's running right there along with Sidell Corley. What Jones brings to the table is an exceptional combination of size, speed and athleticism. As a junior and as the team's best ahlete he was moved all around, starting out at QB, then moving to WR and playing some CB. He has huge hands and has tremendous speed and leaping ability. He can long jump 23-9 and triple jump 49-7 (one of the nation's best jumps for his age group). He is the big, physical and fast CB prospect that all schools want to land. 14 Donovan Warren DB/WR 6'1 175 4.47 Long Beach Poly California Warren is the latest great skill-player out of Poly. As a CB he has a great deal of experience going up daily aginst all-americans such as Terrance Austin and Travonn Patterson in practice. He mis a better prospect than those Pol receivers as he is taller and longer tha they are while possessing similar speed and quickness. He has also been a rare starter since his sophomore season at Poly. As a junior he had 41 tackles and 1 fumble recovery. He didn't have any interceptions as teams threw away from him to the other side of the field (where there was a senior CB who signed with USC, so that gives you some idea of the respect opposing coaches had for Mr. Warren). His fahter, Alvin, was a former Poly star. Has the speed, quickness, hips, size and savvy to be a national elite cover CB prospect. 18 Lamark Brown DB/LB/WR 6'4 215 4.50 Hazelwood West Missouri Kansas State Brown is a prospect who really hasn't received the national recognition that he deserves and since he committed early to Kansas State it probably won't be coming soon. But trust me, he's a player, perhaps the best in the St. Louis area. A classic OLB/safety 'tweener in the best sense of the word as he has the size and speed to excel at either position. He actually plans on playing on offense in college, but I prefer him as a defender. Had already made a name for himself in local circles after a standout freshman season. As a junior he rushed for 1,249 yards, caught six passes for 103 yards and scored 21 TDs. As a safety, Brown he posted 55 tackles (43 solo), three interceptions and one fumble recovery. Some college coaches like him as a linebacker due to his great hitting ability and lack of great straight-ahead speed. Reminds his coach of Purdue standout Bernard Pollard. Many of the nation's top programs are actively pursuing him. One coach said this: "The kid is just a player.
