Class of 2007: Defensive Linemen (Top 296)

Most of the thumbnails listed below were written in the spring/early summer. Rankings have been modified since then.

Marvin Austin DL 6'3 299 4.83 Washington Ballou D.C. Marvin's national coming out party was during the 2005 combine season, where he was dominant as a mere sophomore. He followed that up with a tremendous junior season, registering 86 tackles, 12 TFL and eight sacks. It's rare to find a 300-pounder who runs a sub-4.9 at a combine, and Marvin is that man. He also possesses tremendous strength, having done 30 reps in the 185-pound bench press at a combine his sophomore year. He plays low, uses leverage well and is very affective with his hands. He also has excellent lateral mobility for a wide-body. Just a tremendous national top 20 caliber prospect, at the very least. He leads a strong contingent of D.C. prospects this year. He transfered from Washington Coolidge to Ballou after his junior year, where hew will be joined by his coach at Coolidge and several teammates. Top 15 MD/DC/NVA (Winter 2006); 1-Washington Post-Metro; 1-PS-Dream Team OFFERS: 40+ May Os: GA,PSU,UVA,MD,ILL,DUKE,FSU,TEN,UNC,NCST, LOU,KANST,MS,VT,AL,AUB,ND,MIA,USC

Everson Griffin DL/RB 6'4 264 4.46 Avondale Agua Fria Union Arizona Griffin is the top prospect in Arizona. A versatile performer at FB and DE, he projects at DE in college. As a sophomore he recorded 39 tackles and 10 sacks. As a junior he registered 70 tackles and six sacks. On offense carried the ball 134 times for 794 yards and 10 TDs. He is really quick (super first step), athletic, physical, strong (340 bench, 455 squat) and aggressive off the edge - the ideal DE. As good an athlete as you will find in Arizona, earning all-star honors not just on the gridoron, but also in basketball and track (shot put). Outstanding straight ahead speed but needs to improve his lateral quickness. He was named the MVP of the Los Angeles Scout.com combine, showing off his great speed, technique and strength in completely dominating drills. 3 Torrey Davis DL/LB 6'4 285 4.90 Seffner Armwood Florida Florida Davis is a real load of a lineman who possesses tremendous quickness and agility for a big man. He plays DE at Armwood, a strong program, but projects inside in college. As a junior, he registered 60 tackles and 9 sacks. Just dominates games on both sides of the ball. With his large frame and long arms, he has the ability to clog running lanes and get to the quarterback on passing plays. Just scratching the surface of his potential. One coach had this to say about him: "He just stands out on film, a man among boys. He's so big and athletic. He's one of the top 2-3 linemen I've seen on film this year and I've seen a lot of film." He committed to Florida in August. 19-FLA-JRs (Winter 2006); 1-St. Petersburg Times:-Suncoast; 1-Tampa Tribune-Hillsborough County; 21-FLA-JRs (Fall 2005)); 3Top 12 Juniors (Summer 2005) OFFERS: 20 February Os: FLA,GA,MIA,TEN,FSU, MS,AUB,TEX,WVU,AL, GT,etc...

D'Angelo McCray DL/TE 6'3 280 4.69 Jacksonville Andrew Jackson Florida Florida McCray has emerged as one of the elite overall prospects in the nation. He has that rare combination of size and speed that coaches love to see in a TE. As a TE he can get downfield to make the catch and do damage after the reception. On the other hand, he has the blocking skills of a D1 offensive lineman. On the defensive line he has an incredible first step and has looked completely dominat in one-on-one drills in various combines. One coach said "after seeing just three minutes of his film I knew that we had to offer asap. You just don't find linemen with a skill set like that too often." As a junior he had 24 receptions for 369 yards and 1 TD and at DE registered 75 tackles, 23 TFLs and 13 sacks. As a sophomore he had 25 receptions for 325 yards and 8 TDs. On defense he registered 20 tackles, 42 assists and 10 TFLs. He prefers to play defense, and he would make an excellent DE. He could also grow into an outstanding offensive lineman. He could also excel in college at TE.. Committed to Florida in April. 30-FLA-JRs (Winter 2006); OFFERS: MIA,FLA,FSU,GA,LOU,TEN,ND,SFLA,SCAR,CLEM,AL,NEB,ILL,USC

Joseph Barksdale DL/OL 6'5 315 4.90 Detroit Cass Tech Michigan Barksdale is the top prospect in Detroit and a man-child of a talent for coach Thomas Wilcher's Technicians. He has a great frame and is really well-built, with very little fat. He has a unique combination of strength (430 bench press) and speed (4.9 forty). He's very quick, agile and aggressive. He just explodes off the ball. One of the most impressive physical specimens to emerge out of southeastern Michigan in years. As a junior he tallied 83 tackles, 20 TFL and 8 sacks. He's a solid student with a 3.5 GPA and 21 ACT. One scout had this to say: "He's a real good one. On ther combine circuit he has further strengthened his status as one of the nations elite linemen. Cass Tech hasn't had so talented a lineman since Curtis Greer in the 1970s" HM-News-A-AS; HM-News-Metro OFFERS: 50+ June Os: MICHST,OHST,MICH,ND,TEN,WISC,MIA,USC,TEX,PSU,LSU

Allen Bailey DL/LB/RB 6'4 240 4.93 Darien McIntosh County Academy Georgia Bailey is the top defender in Georgia and one of the nation's best. He starts at MLB and FB in high school but will probably play on defense with his hand down at the next level as a DE. As a DE prospect he is very explosive and quick and could develop into a college all-american down the road. He has great defensive instincts and shows good vision and lateral mobility as a 'backer. As a junior he had 121 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, 2 sacks, and 5 fumble recoveries. He also plays basketball. Bailey has a 3.4 GPA and scored a 1010 on the SAT. 7 Ben Martin DL 6'5 225 4.55 Cincinnati LaSalle Ohio "Big Ben" is the top prospect in Ohio this coming year. A tremendous pass rusher, in part due to his 4.5 speed and great frame, he registered 10 sacks as a junior. He will need to get stronger and improve his run-stopping skills, but that hould come once he gets on a college weight program and finished his prep basketball career. One coach had this to say about him: "He is just so athletic and plays great off the edge. His athleticism really jumps out on film. He will need to get stronger for Big Ten-level ball, but that will come in a couple of years. The most impressive prospect I've seen so far in Ohio." 1-OH-JRS (December); 1-Ohio News Network-AS; 2-OPS-I-AS; 1-Cincinnati Area Catholic League-South Division (DL); 1-DL-Jrs-OH (August 2005) OFFERS: ND,OHST,MICH,FLA,WVU,ILL,DUKE,MD,BC,TEN,MICHST,ND

Sidell Corley DL 6'4 246 4.60 Mobile McGill-Toolen Alabama Florida Possibly the top prospect in Alabama. He has started since his freshman year and as a junior he posted 90 tackles, 17.5 TFL and 9.5 sacks. Corley looked very good at both the Alabama Junior All-Star game practices in December 2005 and at the U.S. Army All-American Combine. He is a very physical and aggressive DE with the quickness to rush the QB and get into the backfield and toughn ess to play against the run. One coach had this to say: "We really like him and he is on the top of our board for DEs. Once he gets bigger he wil be a monster." He committed to Florida in April. Top 11 AL (February 27, 2006); Alabama North-South Junior All-Star Game OFFERS: 47 April Os: MS,MEMPHIS,LOU,FLA,AL,AUB,OK,MIA,MICHST,PSU,TEN,SMS

John Brown DL 6'1 286 5.38 Lakeland Florida Brown is THE best prospect on a talent-laden state champion Lakeland team and one of the elite defensive linemen in the nation. He possesses tremendous strength (400 pound bench press) and has fine speed, both lateral and straight-ahead. He is an all-arounder who plays both the run and pass very well. He is very aggressive and his motor is always running. His only possible negative, a lack of great height, actually helps him in playing low and inside. As a junior he tallied 70 tackles and 4 sacks playing on a defense that usually held the opponents to four and out. He tosses opposing players around lik a rag doll. One coach said: "A hard-nosed and tough inside lineman who has great strength and can also pursue the ball very well for an inside guy. He really clogs up the middle." 1-FLA-JRs (Winter 2006); 1-FSWA-5A-AS; 1-FLA-JRs (FlaVarsity.com-October 25,2005); 3Top 12 Juniors (Summer 2005) OFFERS: NEB,GA,MS,FSU,AL,PITT,LSU,OHST,MD,FLA AT,ORE

Brian Price DL/OL 6'2 270 5.09 Los Angeles Crenshaw California UCLA Price was one of the top players in Los Angeles as a junior, registering 111 tackles and 22 sacks. He's very quick off the line-of-scrimage and has great natural strength and size. He's versatile enough to play at either DT or DE in college, but I like him at DT. He's the top defensive lineman in California. Price and his teammate Raymond Carter turned down offers from USC to commit early to UCLA. ; 11-LA Times-Area Juniors (December) OFFERS: UCLA, CAL,USC,AZ

Kerry Murphy DL/OL 6'5 324 5.68 Hoover Alabama Murphy is a strong and powerful two-way lineman who has emerged as one of the top 6 prospects in Alabama. As a junior he played the entire season with a torn meniscus in his right knee. He's strong (300 bench, 415 squat) and has been dominant playing for a very good Hoover program. He could play on the OL but has the quickness and athleticism to project as a DT. Alabama North-South Junior All-Star Game OFFERS: AUB,AL,MS,CLEM,TEX,LOU

Simi Fili DL 6'3 336 5.30 Salt Lake City Cottonwood Utah Simi is a huge DL prospect with outstanding strength and improved speed. Did I say outstanding strength? How about 73 reps of 185 pounds in the bench press, just one shy of the prep record. Benches 445 pounds. Just a powerful trunk in the middle of the line. Very effective against the run but needs to improve his speed. A cousin of USC signee Stanley Havili and Oregon DL Haloti Ngata. Plays for perhaps the top program in Utah. Has looked exceptional during the 2006 combine circuit, dominating one-on-one drills at the Palo Alto Nike. 2-Salt Lake Tribune-4A-AS (DL); 2-Salt Lake Deseret MN-4A-AS (DL) OFFERS: UTAH,NEB,BYU,OKST, AZ,ORE

Andre Jones DL 6'4 305 5.66 El Paso Andress Texas Texas Jones is the top DL prospect in Texas and committed in February to the Longhorns. He has been a starter in 4A ball (albeit in the relatively weak El Paso area) since his freshman season and has put up some hefty numbers. He is very strong (34 reps in the bench press as a sophomore) and is exceptional defending against the run. Said one college coach: "Jones is a nice player. There is some question about the competition he has played against in southwest Texas, but he has looked good at combines and is a real strong and tough against the run. Texas got themelves a good one, but I don't think he's quite got the athleticism of a Marvin Austin or Ben Martin." 9-JRS-TEX (Winter 2006); Texas Top 16 (Winter 2006); 3-JRS-TEX (December 2005); Top 120 Juniors Texas (Summer 2005) OFFERS: UTEP,NEWMEX,A&M,NW,LOU,OK, OKST,NMST,ND,TEX

Jacoby Monroe DL 6'2 283 5.09 Jacksonville Sandalwood Florida Georgia Tech Jacksonville is a hotbed of prep football talent and Jacoby is one of the next greats to emerge from the city. This despite the fact that he did not play football as a junior due to an off-field incident. That hasn't stopped numerous schools from offering this Dwight Freeney "look-alike" who, at 240 pounds, has great 4.6 speed off the edge. He will be back on the field for Sandalwood as a senior. He also has great upper and lower body strength. This size, speed and strength gives him a unique ability to break on the ball, get to the QB and stuff both he run and pass. Also has the quicks to drop back into coverage. Could even project at LB at the next level, something Jacoby would enjoy. Florida is loaded with great defensive linemen this year. He committed to Georgia Tech in July. 31-FLA-JRs (Winter 2006); 8-FLA-JRs (Fall 2005)) OFFERS: Claims 50+ Os: FLA,GT, FSU,MIA,SCAR,NCST

Will Blackwell DL 6'4 275 5.00 West Monroe Louisiana Blackwell is the top prospect this year out of the strong West Monroe program and he's one of the top 5 prospects in the state. As a junior he had 52 tackles to go with six tackles for loss and four sacks. He has great size, runs well and is very strong. Certainly passes the eyeball test. He's a national recruit. Also fully qualified. 4-LA (Winter 2006); 1-LA (Dandy Don-January 2005); 1-AS; 1-LSWA-5A-AS (DL); 1-District 1-5A (DL); 6-LA (September 2005) OFFERS: LSU, AUB,MS,MSST,LATECH,ARK, LA-MON,AL,TEN, ARK,SMS, TCU,NW,ND,COL,A&M

Ryan VanBergen DL/TE/OL 6'5 250 4.80 Whitehall Michigan Michigan It's a good year for talent in the Muskegon area, and Van Bergen has emerged as a legitimate high-level Big Ten prospect. A two-way star at the prep level, he could project at either DE or TE in college, but I really like him as a DE. He could even grow into an OT. As a junior, he had 20 receptions for 274 yards and 4 TDs. On defense, he recorded 59 solo tackles, 32 TFL and seven sacks. He played the last three games with a separated shoulder. He is tough, aggressive, has a nose for the ball and, on offense, has soft hands and runs excelllent routes. Also plays basketball and runs track (hurdles, sprints, weight events). 3.7 GPA.
